FAQs

Why are the capsules not a deep red/orange like saffron threads?

There are two reasons for this. First, each capsule has 88.25mg of saffron extract, not ground saffron. The extract powder does not have the same deep red/orange color as the root. Second, in order to effectively capsulize the saffron extract it must be mixed with "flowing agents" that further dilute the color.

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

While saffron by itself has long been touted as having health benefits, saffron extract, a concentrated version of saffron, has recently taken the limelight. Part of the reason for the newfound popularity of saffron extract is that it has been shown to have many benefits.  Researchers have shown that Saffron Extract can aid weight loss (via appetite suppression), relieve PMS, provide benefits to those suffering from glaucoma and those showing early indication of macular degeneration.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

For those interesting in taking saffron extract, it is helpful to carefully examine the origins, features, and benefits of this remarkable plant.

In Nature

Saffron is not a plant by itself; instead, it is harvested from the purple crocus, a flower originally native to Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean.  The ancient Greeks and Persians were the first to see the value of the purple crocus and began using saffron in their food.  This was a difficult process; only one pound of saffron can be harvested from an entire acre of purple crocuses. As a spice, saffron is rich and powerful; a little goes a long way.

Minerals

Saffron is very rich in certain minerals and compounds that have certain health benefits. Saffron has a very strong odor; this is caused by volatile oils. These include a number of useful compounds like safranal, pinene, borneol, geraniol and more. These oils are also known as essential oils which have a number of therapeutic properties. Along with these oils, saffron has a number of antioxidants. These compounds are known to help treat and prevent cancer. There are also a number of more conventional minerals in saffron, including calcium, potassium, iron, zinc, and magnesium.

Health Benefits

Saffron, and more specifically, saffron extract are associated with a number of different health benefits.  Many of these benefits are a result of the presence of essential oils antioxidants in the saffron.  In the case of antioxidants, their benefits have been proven time and time again in laboratory scenarios.  These antioxidants are a powerful weapon against cancer (learn more on WebMD). Minerals like potassium have been demonstrated to be effective against high blood pressure. Other minerals found in saffron, like iron and zinc, also provide a number of benefits to the body. Perhaps more significantly, saffron extract is linked to a decrease in PMS symptoms for women who are menstruating. This makes saffron a very appealing option for many women, especially in the place of medications and other drugs. Saffron and saffron extract are also linked to a reduction in the symptoms of depression. This finding was the result of an exhaustive study conducted in a laboratory setting. It should be noted that saffron was shown to help in cases of mild or moderate depression; severe depression still requires possible medication along with counseling.

Weight Loss

Weight loss is a major reason why many people choose to take saffron extract. One of the primary ways in which saffron extract combats weight gain is by eliminating emotional eating. Many people eat when they are stressed or sad. When the connection between feelings and food and reduced, people tend to eat less at each meal. Snacks between meals are reduced, reducing overall calorie consumption.  Therefore Saffron Extract works in a different way than other appetite suppressants or fat burners. Saffron extract is a powerful tool for increased health. If it did nothing but help people stop overeating, it would still be valuable. The fact that it has so many other qualities means that taking a saffron extract daily can be a solid decision for anyone.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF SAFFRON EXTRACT

Few health supplements have gained a reputation for effectiveness as quickly as saffron extract. While it is commonly associated with weight loss, there is far more to saffron extract than that. There are a number of benefits for general health that can be gained by those who take the recommended dosage of saffron extract on a regular basis. Many of the health benefits of saffron have been known for centuries by the peoples of the eastern Mediterranean, where saffron has been a valuable product and spice for almost as long as civilizations have existed in the region. These same health benefits have been documented and studied by scientists, who can affirm that saffron extract is supplement worth taking.

Weight Loss

Saffron extract is popular for those who wish to lose weight. The spice, in extract form works as an appetite suppressant, but more importantly, it curbs emotional eating. People tend to indulge in junk food or to overeat in order to feel the rush that comes from elevated dopamine and serotonin levels in the brain. Saffron offers a way to increase those chemicals without raising caloric intake. In other words, saffron extract provides the same good feeling that people need when they emotionally eat. This prevents them from eating unhealthy food.

Brain Function

Saffron contains a chemical known as crocin. Crocin has been demonstrated to aid in cognition and memory recovery. Those who suffer from memory problems have reported that saffron extract has increased their memory and general mental clarity. There are even indications that those who suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia can benefit from the regular ingestion of saffron extract.

Depression

Crocin has also been shown to benefit those who suffer from depression. Specifically, it helps people deal with stress, which helps with those suffering from moderate to mild depression. Those suffering from severe depression generally require more advanced medications along with counseling.

Blood Pressure

Saffron contains a lot of potassium and other minerals that lower blood pressure. Saffron extract also has anti-inflammatory properties, which further reduces blood pressure. This also helps when it comes to bruises and sores.

Sexual Dysfunction

In the areas where saffron grows naturally, people have been using it as a natural aphrodisiac for thousands of years. The reason for this effectiveness is the ability of saffron to increase blood flow. Increased blood flow has been shown to increase sexual desire with the side benefit of promoting general health in the lower body.

Conclusion

Saffron extract is truly a remarkable product with testimonials stretching back into ancient times. Along with the mood boosting and blood flow benefits of saffron extract, people use it to help with asthma, sleep problems and even dry skin. Saffron contains many anti-oxidants, which have been shown to help prevent or help the body resist cancer. Taking saffron supplements is an easy way to promote general health and to lose weight.

WHERE DOES SAFFRON EXTRACT COME FROM?

The average person is aware of saffron as a spice; something that is added to food for a strong odor and strong flavor. Others also associate saffron with the color yellow. What most people do not know is where saffron, and by extension, the health supplement saffron extract, come from. Saffron actually has a long and fascinating history. It has been extracted from flowers for several thousand years and used in food. Today, saffron is, pound for pound, one of the most valuable commodities in the world. It is grown in areas where the climate can support the flower and harvest every day. Saffron extract, which is noted for having a number of benefits, is taken from the spice itself.

Origins

Saffron is taken from the saffron crocus, a flower also known as the purple crocus. This particular flower was originally found in the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean. It was the Greeks and according to some accounts, the ancient Persians who initially began harvesting saffron from it. The ancient Greeks even had a legend about the purple crocus. According to the legend, a man named Crocus was turned into a flower for daring to love, Smilax, a nymph. Saffron was first used in cooking several thousand years ago, and since then it has remained a valuable food product with a number of health benefits.

Growing Conditions

The purple crocus is a fairly hardy plant. Its native climate is fairly warm and dry in the summer, and wet and mild in the winter, resembling many other climates around the world. Although snowfall is rare in areas where the purple crocus grows naturally, it can and does survive in colder climates where snow is a possibility. The purple crocus also likes open, sunlit areas. Shade hampers growth.

Cultivation

The purple crocus is grown in many locations around the world. This includes not only the Middle East and Greece, but parts of North Africa, Asia, and North America. Parts of California, in particular are ideal for the purple crocus and saffron farming is somewhat common there. Still, the world’s biggest producer of saffron is Iran. Spain is also a major exporter of saffron and Spanish saffron is highly valued. The flowers are mainly cultivated by planting bulbs, known as saffron bulbs. These bulbs travel well and can be stored for a long time, meaning that the flowers were easy to spread in regions where they could grow well.

Harvesting

Saffron is extracted from the purple crocus via a fairly complex process. First, the harvest must take place only during a certain time of year.  Then, there is a long red strand within the flower known as the stigma. When this is removed and dried by exposure to extreme heat, the stigmas become saffron strands. A single flower only makes a miniscule amount of saffron. In fact, it takes roughly 4,000 flowers to create even a single ounce of saffron. An acre of flowers is capable of creating a pound of the spice. Saffron extract is derived from the spice.
